Hurricane Harvey dumped record amounts of rainfall in our area, unlike anything we have ever seen. Our community was devastated by this storm and we will be recovering for a long time. Through this challenge, I have seen heartache, anger, tears and joy. I was talking to some of the people that were rescued and they are very thankful for their lives. I have seen so many people helping others and working together! It has shown me that we live in an amazing community. Houston Strong! Kingwood Strong!
Now back to the question. Does the environment affect our eyes? All I have to say about that is – LOL! That is like asking if you have a higher risk of allergies by living in the Houston area. I meet patients daily that tell me that they either started to get allergies when they moved to Houston or that their allergies have gotten worse since moving here. Their eyes are usually burning, itchy, red, and watery.
Many environmental irritants can affect your eyes. Pollen, pet dander, dust mites and mold are very common irritants. With all the debris in the air following all the home flood remediation in our area, environmental irritants are without a doubt in high concentrations. It is important to protect your eyes and get treatment when necessary. There are many effective treatments for combatting burning, itchy, red, watery eyes. Often, over the counter eye drops are simply not strong enough and only provide temporary inferior relief.
