What is stem cell therapy?

Regenerative medicine including stem cell therapy is an emerging branch of medicine whose purpose is to restore function for patients whose bodies’ own responses are not sufficient to restore functional tissue. Stem cells are basic human cells that have the ability and potential to differentiate to other cell types in the body. Stem cells help to create new cells in structures that have been damaged, injured or suffer the effects of time and wear. Their regenerative capabilities have been shown to play a key role in controlling inflammation and pain, promoting tissue repair and preventing scar tissue formation.

Stem cells can be derived from a variety of sources. One of the most useful is allograft cells derived from the placenta. The tissue is derived from volunteer donors after a full term pregnancy and C-section from the previously discarded placenta. The tissue and cells are attained and preserved in accordance set forth by the FDA and American Association of Tissue Banks for allograft tissue products. These cells along with the proteins and growth factors are essential to support the body’s natural regenerative healing process.

A complete history, exam and appropriate diagnostic tests are necessary to see if this is an appropriate treatment. Regenerative medicine techniques performed by our doctors are an innovative way to use stem cells to treat acute and chronic conditions in areas that have not improved following conservative, non-surgical treatments. Many patients opt for stem cells after exhausting other treatment options but want to explore an alternative to an invasive surgery or where traditional surgery has failed to provide adequate results. It is then a simple office procedure to inject the cells into the affected area. Typically other modalities such as physical therapy are used.
