Of all the things we can say about 2020, it has definitely been unprecedented.
One thing is for sure…We have missed you! In March, we had to close our incredible spring musical, The Little Shop of Horrors, before it completed its run, due to the countrywide mandated restrictions. In April, we decided to reschedule A Chorus Line from May to June/July, and to cancel our season finale, Barefoot in the Park, in order to be extra cautious, and to be considerate of our actors, volunteers, and patrons. After recasting a few of the roles, we chose to close Chorus Line as well. Protocols became stricter across the city, county, state, and country, and we wanted to assure everyone that The Players are serious about the well-being of all of our beloved supporters.
It is our greatest hope that the upcoming season, our 54th! will find you and us together again, sharing laughter, drama, songs, and dancing, at the Owen Theatre! We appreciate our patrons more than anything and are eager to fulfill our mission of producing and presenting quality live theatrical productions as an educational, cultural, non-profit project in our community.
Our plan is to open and run our 2020-2021 season as scheduled with the joyful and thoroughly entertaining Sister Act, the Musical premiering in September, followed by Neil Simon’s The Sunshine Boys, then our Christmas extravaganza Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn in December. Last of the Red Hot Lovers will help you laugh in the New Year, then Footloose and Cabaret will get your toes tapping through the spring, and we will wrap up the season with Larry Shue’s clever comedy, The Foreigner in July.
Please be assured that we are dedicated to making your theatre experience both safe and enjoyable. We have recruited extra volunteers for rehearsals to make sure our actors, artistic and production team members, and technical crew are all staying well and healthy.
When we reopen in September, we will continue to provide the same quality diligent care of and for our patrons as we did at the end of this past season, following all recommendations for Fine Arts Performing Halls and Patrons, which can be accessed on the open.texas.gov website. As long as national safety protocols are in place, we will continue to provide distanced seating arrangements, monitors in the lobbies and restrooms to prevent crowding and to assist patrons in any way, hand sanitizing stations throughout the building, and mask requirements for anyone not seated, including ushers, patrons, and any front of house volunteers. We also will not seat in the front row to make sure the audience is appropriately distanced from the actors on stage. This keeps everyone safe!
We cannot wait to see your smiling faces (well, eyes) again!
