My Family Vet: A Place Where Pets Feel at Home

My Family Vet: A Place Where Pets Feel at Home

Every pet owner knows the battle of getting your pet to the vet. Sometimes the car ride alone can be a nightmare, depending on the animal. For many pets, the unfamiliar sights, sounds and smells of the vet clinic can be overwhelming and frightening. This can cause pets to become anxious, fearful or even aggressive, which can make it difficult for vets to perform necessary exams and treatments. Additionally, some pets may have negative experiences from the clinics in the past, heightening fear and anxiety.

That’s why it’s important to find a vet clinic that understands these challenges, providing compassionate and gentle care. If you’re looking for a stress-free experience, the staff at My Family Vet has designed their clinic to be a space that is safe, loving and compassionate. The team makes it their mission to create a “fear free” environment for you and your pets.

“We are truly honored that each family trusts us with their loved one,”

The Dream Becomes a Legacy

Dr. Clara Scott started out with a simple vision of a veterinarian practice that embodied compassion and excellent care, with a personable experience. She wanted a place where pet owners felt like family, and animals were given the best care possible. While she didn’t have the space yet to make the dream happen, Dr. Scott decided to use what she had—her own home.

Word spread among friends and family that Dr. Scott had opened up the front room of her home to practice and treat animals. As her skills and reputation evolved, Dr. Scott made the move into a 600 square foot facility and hired her first team. From there, Dr. Scott opened her doors to local rescue groups, revealing the need for a larger facility.

In 2006 My Family Vet purchased a ranch house in Spring, Texas where the “family feel” of My Family Vet could truly unfold. 17 years later, My Family Vet has 2 locations with surgical suites, exam rooms, a fully stocked pharmacy, and a welcoming staff. Dr. Scott opened her latest location of My Family Vet Montgomery in 2020, located in the Woodforest area.

Everyone is Family

“Family is not just our name, it’s our culture. We love with all of our hearts.” says Dr. Scott. When you walk in the door at My Family Vet, you’ll feel right at home. Human or animal, canine or rabbit—the clinic provides compassionate care for all. While the vet can be a scary and stressful place for furry friends, My Family Vet staff does their best to make the experience “fear free.”

Each staff member is Fear Free® Certified: a certification program that trains veterinary professionals in behavior, medicine and safe handling. With Fear Free® training, the team at My Family Vet knows how to handle animals in a way that makes them feel safe and loved. Body language is everything with animals, and the team is trained to read the signs for what your pet is feeling and communicating.

Always having your pet’s best interest in mind, My Family Vet takes extra time with pets that are nervous. Instead of pushing your pet past their limits, the clinic only proceeds when the animal is comfortable doing so. For anxious animals that need extra love, the team offers peanut butter or cheese snacks, lavender diffusers to calm anxiety, and separate areas for felines and canines.

Dr. Scott designed her facilities to make your pet as comfortable as possible. From the height of exam tables, to the temperature of the clinic, to the flooring and cleaning solutions—everything is used purposefully with your pet in mind. My Family Vet maintains a sterile environment while simultaneously cultivating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Not only that, when they say “family,” they mean it. Dr. Scott believes we are all God’s helpers. “We have been given a beautiful gift of connection with animals and the ability to practice healing for God’s kingdom,” she says. The team not only takes time to know each person and animal, but also prays, cries and rejoices with them in every situation. “Your pets truly become our pets,” says Dr. Scott.

Personalized Treatment

While more and more veterinary clinics are being bought out by large corporations, the Houston market has been a hotspot for these acquisitions. However, Dr. Scott has made sure to remain independently owned. Surprisingly, My Family Vet is one of the few independently owned clinics in the Montgomery County area.

With the clinic remaining independent, it is much easier to cultivate a family atmosphere and go above and beyond for each customer. This also gives My Family Vet the ability to perform surgeries that other clinics can’t or won’t do. The team provides diagnostics using high tech equipment for cytology, ultrasound, and radiology. “In the veterinarian world, there is no such thing as a general practitioner,” Dr. Scott says. “A veterinarian should be well versed in over 23 different specialties and able to look at the animal’s full body when working through a diagnostic plan.”

With the latest ultrasound technology, Dr. Scott and her team are able to detect changes in the liver, spleen, kidneys or other internal organs much earlier, compared to waiting for external signs. While blood work shows the organ’s function, an ultrasound gives a 3 dimensional view of the organ. Things that normally go unnoticed on x-ray scans are seen by using ultrasound technology.

The most common problem that My Family Vet helps pet owners with is pet allergies. Most people are surprised to learn that in the same ways that they get affected by pollen and weather changes, animals do as well! With the plethora of trees in our local area, pet sinuses can become irritated and cause itching, ear infections, watery eyes, and runny noses. The second most common problem My Family Vet treats comes from too much love—aka human food! While we all love to spoil our pets at the dinner table, Dr. Scott says she often has customers who bring in pets that are suffering from diarrhea caused by too much human food.

Besides keeping our food away from those puppy dog eyes, Dr. Scott says the best thing you can do for your pet is allow the veterinarian to conduct annual wellness exams and routine blood work. This gives them a baseline of your pet’s overall health, so that in the future they can catch any symptoms early. Dr. Scott says that in South Texas, heartworms are a big problem, and getting monthly preventative care is vital for pets. She recommends asking your veterinarian for medicine that will take care of fleas, ticks and heartworms.

In addition to excellent medical care, My Family Vet has a luxury pet resort in Spring called Blessed Paws. If you’re looking for a place to keep your pet with people you can trust while you’re away, this resort is the perfect place! In addition to the resort, there is a grooming service, Doggy Daycare, homemade bakery treats, birthday party events, and more!

Caring for Your Pet Like Family

When it comes to customer service, My Family Vet’s motto is, “To be unclear is to be unkind.” The staff goes the extra mile to answer questions and communicate with pet owners every step of the way. “We are truly honored that each family trusts us with their loved one,” says Dr. Scott. “We want to nourish the relationships between pets and owners with this act of service.”

If you’re looking for a veterinarian near you, come in with your pet and visit My Family Vet! Give your furry friend a chance to walk around, take in all the smells and eat some yummy treats from the staff. The clinic will answer any questions you might have, and introducing your pet to the facility will help them understand it doesn’t have to be a bad thing!
