VA News: The Tuskegee Airman Texas State Veterans Home

Texas State Veterans Homes are owned by the State of Texas and are regulated by both the Texas Health and Human Services Commission as well as the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Third-party operators manage the day-to-day operations of the Veterans homes. The Texas Veterans Land Board oversees the operators and has an on-site representative in each Veterans’ home. The VA does not own or manage Texas State Veterans Homes.

There are many advantages to living in a Texas State Veterans Home from the Veteran-centered care, the VA per diem that helps alleviate some costs of care (including medication and therapy) and the camaraderie of living with fellow Veterans who have similar life experiences. Veterans with a 70% or higher service-connected disability can generally live at the home for free.

The new Tuskegee Airmen Texas State Veterans Home in Fort Worth is a 100,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility that will serve 120 Veterans, spouses, and Gold Star Parents. With a planned opening later this year, the home includes 24 private rooms and a memory support neighborhood for 30 residents. Eligible Veterans with 70% or more service-connected disability rating will live in the home at no cost.

In addition, to the newest Texas State Veterans Home in Waco, other locations include:

Amarillo, Big Spring, Bonham, El Paso, Floresville, Houston, McAllen, Temple and Tyler.

In addition, to the Texas State Veterans Homes the Veteran Land Board also maintains four Texas State Veterans Cemeteries.  These are located in: Abilene, Corpus Christi, Killeen, Mission and due to open summer 2025 Lubbock. Texas State Veterans Cemeteries are special resting places, close to home, where friends, family and fellow Texans can honor Texas Veterans. The sacrifices they laid upon the altar of freedom will never be diminished or forgotten.

Texas State Veterans Cemeteries are built through a partnership between the State of Texas and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and are managed by the Texas Veterans Land Board. The burial benefits at this cemetery include a gravesite in any one of the open cemeteries with available space, opening and closing of the grave, perpetual care, a government headstone or marker, a burial flag, and a Presidential Memorial Certificate, at no cost to the family.

Any member of the United States Armed Forces who dies while on active duty or any Veteran who was discharged under conditions other than dishonorable may be eligible for burial in a national cemetery. Veterans whose only active duty service was for training while in the National Guard or Reserves are not eligible unless there are special circumstances (e.g., death while on duty or as a result of training).

Although you can’t reserve a burial space, you can pre-register. Complete an interment registration form, attaching a copy of the military discharge form (DD-214) (and a copy of a marriage certificate, if applicable). Send these documents to the Texas State Veterans Cemetery of your choice. The cemetery will verify your eligibility, inform you accordingly, and maintain a copy of these documents so that the next of kin doesn’t have to find them at the time of need.

Other services offered by the Texas Veterans Land Board include: home loans, land loans, home improvement loans and land sales.  For more information for all the Veterans Land Board visit their website at vlb.texas.gov.
