Black Bass: Mid-summer is now here and the patterns of most of these fish will be more predictable. Right at daylight I like to target shallow water structures, grass beds, boat docks and several bridges around the lake. Plastic worms, spinner baits and sometimes top water plastic or rubber frogs work well on cloudy days. After the sun comes up a bit, I fish deeper structures such as submerged pond dams, road beds and main lake points in 10’ – 15’ depths using Carolina worm rigs. It helps to get your worm down to the cover much faster especially if there is any wind.
Crappie: Although this isn’t the best time of the year for crappie, because of high water temps, fair catches can still be caught by fishing jigs and minnows along the 1097 Bridge and brush in 15’ – 20’ depths.
White Bass & Hybrid Striped Bass: These strong fighting fish are aggressive during this time of year and can be found near the mid and south sections of the lake in 18’ – 32’ depths. They can be caught on slab spoons or by trolling pet spoons over main lake humps and points. Your electronics is the best way in locating these fish, so move from one section of the lake to another until you locate some.
Catfish: Catfish action is very steady at this time of year and can be caught under the 1097 Bridge and on the edges of river or creek channels in 15’ – 25’ depths. I start out by baiting up an area with range cubes or milo and using dip baits on a sponge hook and fishing the area for at least 30 minutes or so. If the action is a little slow, then move from one area to another until you find some good action.
