Come Watch the Hilarity!
By: Terry Woods
Once upon a time, it was summer in Conroe. The City became hot, hot, hot for something exciting to do. The Owen was a buzzing because the Players Theatre Company answered the call despite the extreme heat. “Come to the theatre for summer fun and hilarity galore. Get your tickets early for the best comedy, mystery in town”. The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 opens on June 29, 2018 and will entertain audiences until July 15, 2018.
This is a period piece complete with an old house, strange passage ways and an eccentric rich owner who loves the theatre. The story takes place in the Chappaqua, New York mansion of Elsa Von Grossenknueten in December 1940 and it follows the mysterious misadventures of the team behind a Broadway flop as they come together for an audition for a new musical. Soon the audience is cooled to fact that many dangers are apparent. The actors arrive at the house freezing from a snow storm, and other mishaps. As one character put it: “Nancy Drew would be in Seventh Heaven here.” The eccentric creatives include arrogant director Ken de la Maize, hoofer Nikki Crandall, comedian Eddie McEuen, Marjorie Baverstock, Roger Hopewell, and Bernice Roth. Imagine the startling “goings on” as each character finds their way through the house and stumbles on a clue or a surprising calamity or worse.
When it comes to comedy for the Player’s Theatre Company look to Orvis Melvin to direct the play to its fullest. Previously he directed 9- to 5, Moon Over Buffalo, and Oklahoma. All were fan favorites. This time he excels with a show that is sure to make you laugh. The cast is full of seasoned comedic actors and a couple of new actors that will be fun to watch.
