STAGE RIGHT Invites you to Come & Meet Those Dancing Feet on 42nd Street

STAGE RIGHT of Texas, resident theatre company at the historic Crighton Theatre, presents quintessential musical comedy 42nd Street February 8-24, 2019. With Book by Michael Stewart & Mark Bramble, Music by Harry Warren, Lyrics by Al Dubin, the show has been called the ultimate show-biz musical. 42nd Street celebrates Broadway, Times Square, and the people who make the magic of musical theatre. Aspiring 1930’s chorus girl Peggy Sawyer comes to the big city from Allentown PA, and soon lands her first big job in the ensemble of a glitzy new Broadway show; Pretty Lady. But just before opening night, the leading lady breaks her ankle. Will Peggy be able to step in and become a star? The score is chock-full of Broadway standards, including “You’re Getting To Be A Habit With Me,” “Dames,” “We’re In the Money,” “Lullaby of Broadway,” “Shuffle Off to Buffalo” and “Forty-Second Street.”

42nd Street first opened on Broadway on August 25, 1980, at the Winter Garden Theatre and closed on January 8, 1989, after 3,486 performances. The original cast included Jerry Orbach as Julian Marsh, Tammy Grimes as Dorothy Brock, Wanda Richert as Peggy Sawyer, and Lee Roy Reams as Billy Lawlor. In the London production of 1984 at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane opening August 8, 1984, the career of then teenaged Catherine Zeta-Jones was launched. In a case of life imitating art- a vacation and an illness felled both the actress portraying Peggy Sawyer and her understudy. One of the producers happened to be in the audience when Zeta-Jones filled in and was impressed enough for Zeta-Jones to be cast permanently in the role shortly afterward. That’s showbiz!
