Did you know that Cy?Fair ISD is the third largest school district in Texas and the largest non-urban school district in the country? Did you also know that over half of the more than 116,000 students in Cy?Fair are labeled “economically disadvantaged,” meaning a family of four makes less than $45,000 per year?
In 2011, a group of people concerned about the children in the Cy?Fair community founded Cy-Hope to serve as a catalyst to bring needs and solutions together. Their goal is to bring hope to economically, relationally, and spiritually at-risk children so they will grow into educated and productive citizens. Cy?Hope’s vision is to mobilize the community to advance the goal of making life better for kids in Cy?Fair.
Cy?Hope brings hope to children through many different programs. Their Backpack Program provides economically disadvantaged students a backpack of food that will help sustain them through the weekend. Three Hope Centers (located in communities that feed into Title I schools) provide places where kids can come for homework help, life skills classes, snacks, crafts, recreation, and other special events. A Mobile Hope Center brings Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) hands-on learning activities to Cy?Fair students. Camp Lemonade sends 120 underprivileged kids on a five-day summer camp experience. Dierker’s Champs, under the direction of former Houston Astros All-Star pitcher and manager, Larry Dierker, creates a fun environment for boys and girls to grow in their knowledge, skill, and love for the game of baseball. Cy-Hope’s music initiative, Devine Virtuosos, helps the district provide students with the resources necessary for successful and competitive music programs. The Providing Opportunities Program (“POP”) provides partial and full scholarships to qualified at-risk students for Dual Credit/Certification/Advanced Placement courses. This year Cy-Hope is bringing the Ambassadors of Compassion program to 6 schools (up from 3 schools last year); this coach/mentor-led program helps equip young at-risk adults with resiliency, hope, and the personal leadership skills to navigate and succeed through life’s inevitable challenges. Cy?Hope Counseling & Speech Therapy offers counseling and education targeted at enriching the quality of life for families and children.
Cy?Hope’s programs are funded via donations, grants, fundraising events, and income streams (The Hope Chest Resale Market along with The Cypress Alamo and Hope Lodge venues). In this issue, we’ll look at several of Cy-Hope’s upcoming fundraising events.
Cy-Hope/Bricks4Kidz Junior Robotics Camp
Playing with LEGO bricks has been a popular pastime for children in the United States for over 50 years. This fun activity helps kids build creativity while developing fine motor skills and problem-solving skills. Cy?Hope has teamed up with Bricks4Kidz to develop a Junior Robotics Camp at which first- through sixth-grade students can enjoy a full day of fun LEGO workshops, crafts, lunch, and age-group competition.
The Junior Robotics Camp will be held at Cy-Hope (12715 Telge Road in Cypress) on Saturday, September 23rd from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The registration fee is $75 per child through August 31st; $85 per child from September 1st through 20th. See Cy?Hope’s events webpage (www.cy?hope.org/events) for more information and to register your child/children for this fun day camp.
Judy Dierker Holiday Market
Mark your calendars now for October 20 and 21, 2017! You won’t want to miss the chance to shop the Judy Dierker Holiday Market – a wonderful fall market featuring almost 120 vendors. Every year, on the third weekend in October, the Foundry Church at 8350 Jones Road hosts this major Cy-Hope fundraiser. Most of their vendors return year after year to showcase everything from clothing, artisan food items, home décor, yard art, jewelry, handcrafted specialty items, toys, candles, holiday decorations, and more. The market happens rain or shine, with indoor and outdoor shopping options – and shoppers enjoy free admission and parking.
In addition to a wide array of booths to shop, this market offers a Dierker’s Dugout concession stand with all kinds of dugout fare – a nod to Judy’s husband, former Major League Baseball pitcher, announcer, and manager of the Houston Astros, Larry Dierker. After a fun lunch, you can head to the Coffee & Treat Shoppe for delicious desserts, iced coffees, and a pie or two to go. You’ll want to walk off all those goodies, so take a stroll after lunch through the aisles of their silent auction and shop the hundreds of spectacular baskets. They have two separate auctions each day, so shoppers can know if they won items by the end of the day. Cy-Hope opened The Hope Chest Resale Market in 2016 – and their resale team brings some of their hottest items to the market if you’re looking for items at a great price and for a great cause. They’re also proud of the Foundry Stitchers – a group of talented sewers – who work each year to create a whole booth of handcrafted items – as well as beautiful quilts to raffle for Cy?Hope.
This market began in the late 1990’s as a small fashion and craft show. Since then, it has grown into one of the two biggest fundraisers for Cy-Hope’s programs, with vendors often signing up for the next year’s market as soon as the current one ends. Hundreds of volunteers donate their time to make this event possible – whether baking for the Coffee & Treat Shoppe or serving a shift or two on market days.
This market has something for everyone – and happens each year just in time to welcome the cooler weather we all crave – so gather your family and friends or come solo for some serious shopping time. You’ll walk away with some great finds and help make life better for the kids in Cy-Fair – all at the same time.
If you’re a vendor and would like to participate in the 2018 Judy Dierker Holiday Market, be sure to like Cy-Hope’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/CyHopeTx) and watch for Judy Dierker Holiday Market news in January.
Larry Dierker Celebrity Golf Shootout
Most people know Larry Dierker as a great Major League Baseball All-Star pitcher, manager, and broadcaster but don’t know that he was Cy-Hope’s Chairman from its inception in 2011 through 2016 and remains a member of its Board of Directors. Larry doesn’t just lend his name to one of Cy-Hope’s largest fundraising events, the Larry Dierker Celebrity Golf Shootout; he’s actively involved in the planning of it as well.
This year’s Larry Dierker Celebrity Golf Shootout will be held on Thursday, November 2nd at the award-winning BlackHorse Golf Club at 12205 Fry Road in Cypress. This all-inclusive day includes lunch, beverages, dinner, raffle, player gifts, and an exciting round of golf with celebrities. Registration starts at 10 a.m. followed by lunch and then the shotgun start at noon. The dinner, raffle, and silent auction start at 5:30 p.m.; spouses are welcome for dinner for $25. Sponsorship opportunities begin at $400. Check out Cy-Hope’s events webpage (www.cy?hope.org/events) for information on registering as an individual player, team, or sponsor for this event.
Look for Cy-Hope at these Upcoming Community Events
Cy-Hope is looking forward to participating at several upcoming community events. On September 9th, they’ll be at the Cy?Fair Women’s Club Shop ‘Til You Drop. In October, you’ll find them at the CFISD Health Expo (10/14 at the Berry Center, 8877 Barker Cypress Rd. in Cypress), Cypress Creek Lakes Zombie Stomp 5K race and 1 mile family run/walk (10/28 at 10080 Cypress Creek Bend Ln. in Cypress), and Bridgeland Howl?O?Ween Fest (10/28 at Bridgeland’s Oak Meadow Park). Cy?Hope is grateful to have been selected as the recipient of the Zombie Stomp and Howl?O?Ween Fest proceeds.
