Diabetes is the 6th leading cause of death in Texas and it cost the state more than 12 billion dollars. Currently, in Houston there are approximately 750,000 people living with diabetes, 1.8 million people are pre-diabetic and an alarming 200,000 individuals are undiagnosed.
In response, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service-Harris County has implemented the Wisdom, Power, Control Program. This free program is predicated on the American Diabetes Association’s national standards of care. It is a 6 week, evidence informed self-management program for adults over the age of 18 living with type 2 diabetes and their caregivers, anyone pre-diabetic, and anyone interested in learning more about diabetes. Each session is approximately 1 ½ hours and educational materials are provided.
The aim of the program is to increase participant’s diabetes knowledge, and empower them with lifestyle skills to better manage their diabetes through engaging, hands on activities and lessons.
Topics for Wisdom, Power, Control include:
- What is Diabetes
- The myths and facts about diabetes
- Checking your blood glucose levels and how to use a glucometer
- Eating healthy with diabetes
- Physical activity and diabetes,
- Medicines and diabetes, and
- Preventing diabetes problems.
The program will be conducted by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension professionals in the Bear Creek area on Mondays, September 11th, 18th, 25th and October 2nd, 9th and 23rd. The classes will be held at the Harris County Library – Tyra Brach-Bear Creek located at 16719 Clay Road, Houston, Texas 77084 from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
