Express Blinds & Shutters

By Fabian Sandler

Summer, in all its heat and humidity, is here to stay. A brief thunderstorm may give us a temporary respite from the blistering high temperature, but only adds to the humidity. Air conditioning systems work overtime in this weather; window blinds tend to be closed as the war against the swelter rages on.

Closed blinds tend to draw attention on themselves. Home owners may look upon those closed blinds and start to consider the time is ripe to replace them. Window treatment changes and upgrades are a reasonably inexpensive project to beautify one’s home, especially when taking advantage of the summer promotion at Express Blinds & Shutters.

The promotion that runs until August 13 is called Smart Shades Savings Event. Rebates start at $150 on qualifying purchases with PowerView Motorization and the associated smart hub. The products eligible for the promotion are:

  • One Luminette Privacy Sheer, plus $150 rebate per each additional unit
  • Two Silhouete Window Shadings, plus $75 rebate per additional unit
  • Two Pirouette Window Shadings, plus $75 rebate per additional unit
  • Four Duette Honeycomb Shades, plus $38 rebate per additional unit
  • Four Vignette Modern Roman Shades, plus $38 rebate per additional unit
  • Four Sonnette Cellylar Roller Shades, plus $38 rebate per additional unit.

Owner Lynn Nguyen has been at the head of Express Blinds & Shutters for over eighteen years. She enjoys being in the store on Saturdays, taking care of her customers. During the week, sales assistants Jenifer Lee and Alma Valencia assist customers, while Lynn visits with clients in their homes, displaying samples of what is available in the store

Customers like the fact that Express Blinds & Shutters is listed with the Better Business Bureau when they Google window treatment stores in their area. Lynn is well known in the neighborhood, partly because she is listed in the Kingwood and Eagle Spring neighborhood Facebook pages.

One of the promotion items, Sonnette Cellular Roller Shades, is a new product that won the WCMA Product of the Year for 2017. “Sometimes people don’t like the look of the honeycomb [design on shades],” Lynn expounds. “But they want something that will give them some privacy, but still allow them some light filtering.” The Sonnette Cellular Roller Shades have wider horizontal slats than honeycomb designs, yet still look modern and contemporary. By simply pulling gently on the wand, or with the remote control, the Roller Shades go up and down. This motorized design is especially effective for upper windows.

Using luxurious fabrics and soft folds give Vignette Modern Romance Shades a clean, crisp look, with the added benefit of enhanced child safety. These shades are offered in semi-sheer, light-filtering ands room-darkening fabrics, helping to create warm, inviting, beautiful windows.

The honeycomb construction in the Duette Honeycomb Shades creates air pockets where light meets color. Raising and lowering from top or bottom to suit the day or one’s activities, this style of shades is an attractive, classic choice that are available in a wide range of fabrics, pleat sizes, colors and textures.

A new item that made its debut in the store last year is the Designer Banded Shades, which have a sheer mesh background and horizontal slats that when opened, allow filtered light in while maintaining privacy.

People with older homes have also called Lynn for her recommendations on how and what to change in order to make their window treatments more appealing and modern, or to give the homestead a classic look

Lynn says that thick shutters are currently more popular because they allow more light in when opened. “People like to do shutters with a clear view,” the owner attests, adding that shutters are good for bedrooms because they can provide a dark environment for sleeping when closed.

“Living rooms and breakfast rooms tend to be toward the back of houses,” Lynn relates. “People may have views of the golf course or a lake, or a beautiful back yard with a swimming pool. Or they may have outdoor kitchens with a beautiful patio. They like to put shades so they can raise them up.”

Child safety continues to be uppermost in everyone’s mind. Express Blinds & Shutters and HunterDouglas are no different. The company has been hard at work in improving their products in making them safer around children. Gaining in popularity are new lines that feature cordless shutters and blinds. In lieu of dangling cords, motorized systems allow raising and lowering the shades and blinds by touch, and wands now allow the user to simply twist the units open and closed, or by remote control. Check the floor samples on display to see how well they work with easy hand guidance and with the wands replacing old-fashioned cords, or with remote controls and, of course, iPhone and iPad apps.

Michael from Kingwood came to Express Blinds & Shutters to replace his kitchen blinds. “We stopped here before,” Michael explains, “and liked the selection, and when the current blinds finally gave up the ghost, we decided to come back and look more seriously. We like what we see. Lynn is a very energetic salesperson. We appreciate the special service.”

It may be hard to fathom in the middle of August, but fall will be here in only a few months. It will be a time to open windows, let the light in, and host parties indoors and perhaps on the patio. Company will enjoy the new window treatments as motorized shades let in the light through new window treatments.
