Great fishing is just around the corner as Lake Livingston settles out after record high levels. Conditions are shaping up for the annual White Bass run. Whites should be moving up the river and creeks stacking up in deep holes to spawn. The males will come first and then the females heavy with eggs. Look for Black Bass to move shallow on the nest as water temperatures rise. Thinking back over 30 years of fishing Lake Livingston February brings back great memories. With the right conditions falling into place February is the month to be on Lake Livingston. Old man winter needs to go away and with warming trends all species of fish will be biting.
Lake Livingston consists of over 90,000 acres of water and 450 miles of shoreline.
Black Bass – (largemouth) Fish black and blue lizards and June bug Baby Brush hogs around the logjams now. Throw white spinner baits around shallow wood and rocky points. Some good fish still being caught on Charlie’s jigs fished around docks in Newton, upper Carolina and Bethy creeks.
Catfish – Good fishing for big Blue Cats on drifted shad mid lake and lower lake regions. Good catfishing on rod and reel baited with fresh shad. Fishing for Blue Cats on jugs has been good in in the bays when the wind is blowing. Harmon Creek is producing Blue Cats early morning fishing under the bird roost.
Crappie – Fishing should improve as the creeks clear out. Look for Crappie to move shallow near the banks in upper lake creeks. Fish minnows and jigs on a slip cork in 2’ to 4’ of water as water temperature rises.
White Bass – Whites will be moving up the river and creeks for the spawning run. Pay close attention now to current weather patterns and water levels. If the main river channel near Riverside is low and green the Whites will spawn in the River. If the water is up and the creeks are moving look for Whites far up the creeks. Throw ¼ oz. Tsunami Cocktail spinners and ¼ oz. Sassy Shad.
