STAGE RIGHT Presents 10th Season at the Historic Crighton Theatre
By Carolyn Corsano Wong
It is hard to believe but we auditions for the first two shows in our 10th season. We have named it appropriately enough: A Season of Triumph. ‘Triumph’ because when we started our theatre company back in 2008 there were so many factors against our success: the economy was tanking, there was already an established theatre company in Conroe (was Conroe able to support another?), and we couldn’t afford to spend a lot on advertising because we needed the precious few funds we did have to spend on production costs. With the support of many in the community, especially our friends at Dockline Magazine, we persevered. We did have some lean times. We didn’t turn a profit on a show until our production of Annie in 2010, then, we were off and flying. STAGE RIGHT now holds the record at the Crighton for the highest attended and highest grossing show to have ever appeared there since it became a live performance venue. We staged a world premiere production of one of the three most produced playwrights in the country (Jones, Hope & Wooten’s Mama Won’t Fly), and most importantly, we’ve been able to provide much needed income to the historic Crighton Theatre. Last year, STAGE RIGHT provided over $100,000 to the Crighton in the form of rent, fees and an extra slice of our profit pie on our most attended shows. Additionally, with every show we’ve highlighted a need in the community and then thrown a spotlight on a non-profit organization that is trying to fill that need. Over the years we’ve collected food for the food bank, personal care items for the elderly, sent supplies to our military overseas, donated nearly $2,000 to the Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation at the personal request of legend Carol Burnett, and last summer we collected over $4,000 for Operation Pets Alive to support the spay and neuter efforts and sponsor a flight to transport animals to forever homes. We’ve accomplished a lot in our 9 seasons and are looking forward to a very bright future. We hope you will join us for our 10th Season of Triumph at the Crighton:
By Michael Frayn Sept. 8-24, 2017
Touted as one of the funniest plays ever written, this play-within-a-play captures a touring theatre troupe’s production of Nothing On in three stages: final dress rehearsal, an early performance, and a performance towards the end of a debilitating run. Frayn gives us a window into the inner workings of theatre behind the scenes, progressing from flubbed lines and missed cues in the dress rehearsal to mounting friction between cast members in the final performance. Brimming with slapstick comedy, Noises Off is a delightful backstage farce, complete with slamming doors, falling trousers, and flying sardines!
