Quality preventative and cosmetic dental care at affordable prices
By Brad Meyer
Great smiles don’t just happen. They are the result of good choices and regular checkups with an experienced oral healthcare professional.
In an era when the cost of healthcare is anything but affordable, a lot of people are putting off regular dental exams and hoping for the best. It’s a strategy that’s penny wise and dollar foolish, because minor issues that can be handled easily early on can become major problems if left untreated.
“We offer families a comprehensive care dental practice,” said Dr. Thomas Little. “We tailor our procedures to match the specific concerns and needs of every individual in our practice.”
Putting patient needs first is important.
“We strive to make our practice cater to each individual patient,” he said. “Our mission is to treat patients as we would treat our own family in a fun, safe and relaxing atmosphere. It’s really more than just making a great, confident smile ? our practice is a way of treating people.”
Dr. Little has been practicing since 1967 when he graduated with honors from the University of Texas Dental School. Following a brief retirement to pursue an avid appreciation of hunting and fishing, he resumed his practice in Conroe in 2008.
“When I was younger I thought it would be great to be able to hunt and fish to my heart’s content,” said Dr. Little. “But after a while, I felt like I got more satisfaction from helping people.”
Initially, Dr. Little returned to practice with a position with a large, well known corporate dental company. It didn’t take long before he discovered his style of treating patients was quite a bit different than the big companies.
“My biggest objective is to help people in need of quality dentistry,” said Dr. Little. “We are a compassionate practice.”
Part of that compassion is offering special treatment options to those who have a fear of dental examinations and procedures. Dr. Little is one of the few practitioners offering conscious sedation ? a combination of nitrous oxide and a strong sedative to help people deal with their fear.
“We can vary the degree of sedation to fit the situation,” explained Dr. Little. “You’ll need someone to drive you home, but this is an option for people who are putting off an exam or a problem because of their fear or anxiety of dental procedures.”
It’s just one of the many ways in which Dr. Little’s practice is different from most dentists. For decades, dentists have encourage flossing as an important part of oral hygiene, but recent studies have shown that flossing can actually push bacteria between the teeth and gums which could result in decay and other problems.
“Actually, a Waterpic with body temperature water and three or four capfuls of Cool Mint Listerine before brushing will work a lot better,” said Dr. Little. “It’s not that flossing is always bad, but it doesn’t have the universal benefit we were led to believe.”
For Dr. Little, the key is to achieve the healthiest mouth possible ? assessing the patient’s gum tissue and underlying bone structure and developing a long range plan for oral health. This includes treatment of an existing gum disease and establishing appropriate intervals to prevent tooth loss due to gum disease.
This is aided by the use of state-of-the-art dental technology, including a new digital x-ray for accurate imaging and the storing of patient history. New technology also helps with the treatment of root canals or endodontic procedures.
As a full service dentist, Dr. Little offers an array of services, including implants, root canals, fillings, crowns, bridges, extractions and other procedures. For those seeking cosmetic services, Dr. Little’s practice offers teeth whitening, veneers and more.
Creating a comprehensive plan for ideal dental health blends the art and science of dentistry with everyday realities of lifestyle, personal attitudes about health and budget.
“There have been some wonderful advancements in the science of dentistry in recent years,” said Dr. Little. “But it’s also important to recognize the importance of personal interaction with our patients and respect for them as individuals.”
For Dr. Little, the goal of his practice is to provide quality dental care that helps achieve and maintain optimum health. The ability to help patients is what drew him to dentistry in the first place.
“It’s important to spend time with my patients, to educate them on their condition, the possible causes and their treatment options,” said Dr. Little.
