Summer is upon us and fleas and ticks will be more abundant.  These pests can be bothersome for both you and your pets. Veterinarians recommend monthly flea and tick prevention for dogs and cats.

Timing is everything… Fleas love warm weather and often increase in numbers during the summer months. Fleas can live on any warm-blooded animal, but seem to prefer to live on humans, cats, dogs, or other rodents such as rats. They can also be found in your home on clothing, carpet, blankets or furniture. Flea bites can be painful red itchy bumps. You may notice your pet increase scratching or biting his/her skin, scabs, or excessive hair loss. Treatment is simple, when you catch them early.

Spring and summer are usually the heaviest time for ticks, but around here they can live year-round; especially in areas where the deer are prevalent. Ticks carry diseases that can be passed on to humans. Lyme disease is one disease that can cause significant complications if left untreated. Ranging from severe migraines to flu-like symptoms lyme disease affects roughly 300,000 people a year. If you find a tick on your pet, please remove it immediately.

Flea and tick prevention for dogs can come in a chewable pill such as Credelio or Bravecto. Simparica Trio is an all-in-one that prevents fleas, ticks, and heartworms. There is also a topical medication, Advantage Multi, that covers fleas and heartworms. Preventions are species specific! Please read your label carefully before administering. Advatage Multi for Cats is great for our feline friends in preventing fleas and heartworms, or Bravecto Plus for Cats (all-in-one) prevention for fleas, ticks, and heartworms.

Always discuss with your veterinarian when deciding what is the best product for your pet!
