The Players Theatre Presents: Calendar Girls

In April of 1999, something unexpected occurred in Yorkshire, England.  A community organization of women of a ‘certain age’, friends, responded uniquely to tragedy.  One of their members, Angela Baker, lost her husband John to a terrible disease-Leukemia.  In response, the friends embraced life, beauty, laughter, and irreverence, and released a calendar to raise money for Blood Cancer UK in support of research to understand and defeat the nefarious disease.  Unlike previous charitable efforts, this calendar eschewed the traditional trappings of local landmarks and instead paired the crafts and activities of the organization with photographic portraits of the members themselves-and little else. Eleven of the members, including Angela herself, appeared in the nude.

Initially printing an ambitious run of 1,000 calendars, eventually more than 325,000 were sold, raising more than 5 million pounds for Leukemia research. The calendar girls became an international phenomenon.

The story was adapted for a movie, a play, a musical, and, soon a movie musical, and The Players Theatre Company is proud to present the play Calendar Girls at the Owen Theatre, January 20-February 5, 2023.  This story of friendship and beauty celebrates the years that season them both.

The Player’s Calendar Girls brings together some of the most beautiful actors of the Conroe area with several familiar and new faces to the Owen stage.  At its core, the play is about the connections between women and how they are tested and changed through loss, challenge, and notoriety.
