National Youth Theater Presents Two Musicals in March: Seussical and The Sound of Music

“Oh, the thinks you can think” when Dr. Seuss’ best-loved characters collide and cavort in an unforgettable musical caper! Step into the world of Dr. Seuss by watching this action packed and plot twisting musical. Seussical is a mixture of various Dr. Seuss books all thrown into one 2 hour production. Stories such as Horton Hears a Who, Gertrude McFuzz, McElligot’s Pool, Green Eggs and Ham, If I Ran the Circus, Hunches in Bunches, and The Cat in the Hat.

Now one of the most performed shows in America, Seussical is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! Tony winners, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, have lovingly brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie and a little boy with a big imagination – Jojo. The colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos.

Seussical tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many “thinks.” Horton faces a double challenge: not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant.

Seussical is great fun for the whole family! Don’t miss out on all the fun and all the “thinks you can think!”

Seussical opens on March 10 at Concordia Lutheran High School located at 700 E. Main Street in Tomball with performances through March 12. Purchase your tickets online at nationalyouththeater.org/ticketing.

The world’s favorite musical bursts onto the National Youth Theater (NYT) stage, alive with The Sound of Music! NYT will be producing the 90-minute youth version with the same iconic songs everyone knows and loves. The heartwarming story about love, courage, and the power of music, it’s easy to see why The Sound of Music enchants both the young and the young at heart.

The final collaboration between Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein II, The Sound of Music, has become a play beloved around the world. Based on the true story of the von Trapp Family Singers, The Sound of Music tells the story of Maria Rainer, a free-spirited young woman who leaves the convent to become a governess to a Naval officer’s children in Austria during World War II. Maria transforms the home of the von Trapp family from a place of rules and regulations to one filled with joy, laughter, and music. In the process, she wins the hearts of all seven children – and their widowed father.

Featuring a trove of cherished songs, including “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “My Favorite Things,” “Do Re Mi,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and the title number, The Sound of Music won the hearts of audiences worldwide, earning five Tony Awards and five Oscars.

We’ve all grown up with this story of overcoming obstacles, changing for the better, and following your dreams. Join NYT as the hills come alive at the Nancy Bock Center for the Performing Arts!
