National Youth Theater Brings a Classic Princess Story to Life with Anastasia: The Musical

National Youth Theater (NYT) celebrates 10 years this year and is kicking off the 2024 spring season with the production of Anastasia: The Musical.

From Tony winners Terrence McNally, Stephen Flaherty, and Lynn Ahrens, creators of such Broadway classics as Ragtime and Once On This Island, this dazzling show transports its audience from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s, as a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a dashing con man and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love, and family.

Music is a critical part of bringing a fairy tale to life, and Anastasia does that with ease through its joyful and elegant songs. It includes beloved melodies from the film, like “Journey to the Past” and “Once Upon a December,” as well as other songs that further the audience’s connection with the characters. The song “In My Dreams” goes into depth about Anya’s struggle to remember her past, helping the audience sympathize with her as the main character. Later in the show, the song “In a Crowd of Thousands” deepens the chemistry between Anya and Dmitry.

It shows that the magic of a great princess story never fails to warm hearts, no matter how old you are.

The talented cast, comprised of ages 8-19, includes Rory Amos as Anastasia, Canaan Bowles as Dmitry Sudayev, Davison Huber as Vladimir “Vlad” Popov, Judah Bowles as Deputy Commissioner Gleb Vaganov, Gabriela Velasquez as Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, and Isabella Barosh as Countess Lily Malevsky-Malevitch. The directorial team for this magical princess story that appeals to audiences of all ages includes director Aimee Bowles, assistant director Shana Manna, vocal director Kristi Vaughn, choreographer Erica Gallegos, choreographer intern Beth Hale, and directing intern Angela Ward.
