Montgomery ISD Fishing Team: Double Duty

Montgomery ISD Fishing Team: Double Duty

In March, the MISD Fishing Team pulled “Double Duty,” by competing in two tournaments.  The first one was the Texas High School Bass Association Houston Division Tournament at Lake Conroe on Saturday, March 23rd.  The second was the Bass Federation event held on Sam Rayburn Sunday, March 24th. Both events saw students from both Montgomery and Lake Creek High Schools having tremendous success.

At Lake Conroe, the Team was able to defend their THSBA Houston Division Crown, by handily defeating the other 20 High Schools in the Division.  This marked the program’s 9th Divisional Title in 10 years of competing.

Leading the charge was the “Bass Fishing Firm” of Scogin & Scogin.  Lucas and Brad Scogin brought in an impressive 5 fish limit that tipped the scales at 17.06 pounds, landing these cousins in 5th place out of 160 Individual Teams.

Following the “Firm” was the Team of Hunter Sumner and Jace Zabiegala.  This pair brought in a nice limit of 5 bass which weighed 16.81 pounds, claiming 6th place.  Hunter also caught the big fish of the tournament, an 8.42-pound tank.

The 3rd Team that did well for MISD were Caden Jendrusch and Harper Heathcott.  This pair brought in a 5 fish limit of their own for 14.05 pounds, landing them in 12th place.

All totaled, the top 3 Teams for MISD had a combined weight of 47.92, easily outdistancing their closest competitor by over 4 pounds.  This victory was the 4th of the Divisional Season and coupled with a 2nd place at Sam Rayburn earlier in the year, earns the Team the THSBA Houston Division Champions Title for the 2023-24 campaign.

Now, comes the “Double Duty” part of this story, as we had 8 teams signed up for the Bass Federation event on Sam Rayburn on Sunday.  These teams left straight from the weigh in at Conroe and descended up to Sam Rayburn with the goal of one of these Teams qualifying to go to the National Championship by winning this event.

Unfortunately, the Team of Colton Hatzold and Jett Moore came up just short, landing in 2nd place in the event.  This pair had an impressive 5 fish limit for over 16 pounds, but this valiant effort was just not enough to send a Team to the TBF Individual National Championship this Summer.

Next up for the Team was the THSBA Regional Championship which was held on Lake Limestone on April 13th. It will be there that the MISD Fishing Team looked to capture their 5th Regional Championship.
