Waxahachie Moves Trunk-O-Palooza to Getzendaner Park for Saturday

Waxahachie's free Trunk-O-Palooza returns Saturday, Oct. 17, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Getzendaner Park, with trick-or-treating from decorated vehicles, costumes and music.

There are worse ways to spend a Saturday afternoon in October than walking a shady park with a child in a homemade costume and a candy bucket. Waxahachie is offering just that this weekend.

The city's third annual Trunk-O-Palooza is set for Saturday, Oct. 17, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Getzendaner Park, 400 S. Grand. The city calendar lists the event as free.

New home, same idea

A listing from 99.5 The Wolf, a city partner, says the event is back "at a new location" this year. The city describes an afternoon of trick-or-treating, decorated vehicles, costumes, games, music, food trucks, inflatables and giveaways. Families walk from trunk to trunk, and the people who decorated them hand out treats.

A trunk-or-treat is a simple thing. Neighbors back up their cars, open the hatches, and turn them into little stages: a pirate ship, a pumpkin patch, a superhero's lair. Children get candy, parents get a well-lit, contained place to walk, and nobody has to knock on a stranger's door after dark. Churches have done this for years, and it is good to see a city do it too.

Before you go

  • When: Saturday, Oct. 17, 3 to 6 p.m.

  • Where: Getzendaner Park, 400 S. Grand, Waxahachie

  • Cost: Free

  • Questions: The city lists 469-309-4270 as the event contact

Food trucks will be there, so bring a little cash or a card if the family will want supper. The Wolf's listing also invites businesses and groups that want to host a trunk to sign up as vendors.

More on the calendar

If Saturday doesn't work, the city has more planned. Its calendar lists the Crossroads of Texas Country Festival downtown on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Trick-or-Treat on the Square follows on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 3 to 5 p.m. around the historic downtown square.

For the civic-minded, the city council's next regular meeting is Monday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. in Meeting Rooms A and B of the Waxahachie Civic Center, 2000 Civic Center Lane.

Before you go, Dock Line has costume safety tips for parents and kids and a few healthier treat ideas.

Small-town traditions don't keep themselves going. They last because families show up. Saturday is a good day to show up.
