SJRA Christmas Tree Drive

It’s that time of year! The San Jacinto River Authority is preparing for its Annual Christmas Tree Drive. During January, SJRA collects live Christmas trees at a drop-off location located at the west side of the Lake Conroe dam. The last day to drop-off for this season’s tree drive is Friday, January 26th.

The Christmas Tree Drive is a partnership between SJRA and Texas Parks and Wildlife to create fish habitat in Lake Conroe while also helping the ecosystem of the lake. “When Lake Conroe first filled, a lot of the area was heavily forested and had many native shrubs,” said Alice Best with Texas Parks and Wildlife. “Over time, all that wood begins to rot. The Christmas trees are able to mimic some of the lost natural wood to provide stable fish habitat.”

SJRA’s Lake Conroe Division attaches the trees to cement blocks and sinks them at a designated location in the lake. After the trees are deployed, the location is publicized on SJRA’s social media so anglers can use it as a fishing location. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube so you can see our updates of this year’s Christmas tree deployment and GPS coordinates for anglers!

To see the specific location of where you can drop off your Christmas tree, please refer to the map in the graphic. Please remember the tree needs to be a live Christmas tree (not artificial), and it needs to not have any decorations on it. We look forward to working with the community to create fish habitat to preserve and protect the best water in Texas!
