BREAKTHROUGHS IN HEARING IMPROVEMENT
I have been a board certified ear nose and throat specialist since 1983. As such, I have been on the front lines of improving health and function of my patient’s ears, which of course includes their hearing.
I have had my current practice in Montgomery since 2012. For the last 4 years I was the last to have as my audiologist Dr. Teresa Schroder. Many of you have seen her regarding hearing evaluation and amplification fitting. Recently she retired which was definitely a loss to my practice.
However I am very pleased to announce that working in my office is Ross Tonini, Doctor of Audiology.
Dr. Ross Tonini received his clinical doctorate in audiology at the Baylor College of Medicine in 1999 and has worked in the field of communication for over 40 years as a speech-language pathologist and as an audiologist. He has extensive experience with diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss with hearing aids, cochlear implants, and bone-anchored hearing devices. He has actively participated in hearing research and has presented his findings at both national and international hearing loss meetings. Dr. Tonini has worked passionately to help people with hearing loss and communication disorders. He is an avid cyclist and sings with the Houston Choral Society recently returning from a performance at New York City’s Carnegie Hall. He looks forward to working with individuals with hearing loss in our region.
As an example of a fascinating new technology to improve hearing, a surgical procedure exists to place a tiny magnet on the smallest bone in the body just located behind the eardrum. This drives sound waves directly into the inner ear and greatly improves high frequency hearing. Dr. Tonini is now the only audiologist in the Houston area approved by the implant company for fitting patients with this amplification device and providing follow-up care. Additionally, the implantation is approved by Medicare for many patients so the out-of-pocket cost is much less for those who qualify.
In my office we are also working on a new treatment for inner ear vertigo called Ménière’s disease that shows promise.
Ears and the problems that affect them are a special passion for my office.
