Weatherford Animal Shelter Pairs Trunk-or-Treat With Discounted Adoptions
The Weatherford Animal Shelter's free Trunk or Treat on Saturday, Oct. 24, brings candy, costume contests and discounted adoptions to 403 Hickory Lane.
Most trunk-or-treats send children home with candy. In Weatherford, a family might go home with a dog.
The Weatherford Animal Shelter's annual Trunk or Treat is set for Saturday, Oct. 24, from noon to 3 p.m. at the shelter, 403 Hickory Lane, according to the city's event page. It is free and open to the public.
What to expect
The city lists decorated trunks with candy, carnival games, local business vendors and discounted animal adoptions. A children's costume contest and a trunk decorating contest both start at 2:30 p.m. Families can also meet the shelter animals waiting for homes.
If you are thinking about adopting
The shelter's FAQ page lists regular adoption fees of $90 for male dogs, $100 for female dogs and $50 for cats. Fees include spay or neuter, rabies vaccination, a microchip and basic vaccinations. The city's event listing does not say how big Saturday's discount will be.
The shelter says adopting takes four steps: come in, visit the pets that interest you, pick one that fits your home, and take the kennel paperwork to the front office. Bring a government-issued ID. You will fill out a short questionnaire, sign an adoption agreement and pay the fee. Anyone, in or out of the county, may adopt.
The shelter also says it takes in more than 6,000 animals a year. It has kept a live release rate of 90% or higher since 2015, including 94% in fiscal year 2024.
Other ways to help
Not every family is ready for a new pet, and that is fine. The shelter accepts dog and cat food, kitty litter, collars and leashes, laundry detergent and bleach, dropped off in person. It also welcomes volunteers, saying as little as four hours a month makes a difference.
Shelter hours
The shelter info page lists regular hours of 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. It is closed to the public Sunday and Monday. The shelter's number is 817-598-4111.
Scripture says a righteous man regards the life of his animal. A Saturday afternoon of candy and costumes that also finds homes for a few dogs and cats is a fine way for a town to do just that.
