Seguin Master Gardeners Bring Their Plant Sale to Pecan Fest Saturday
Guadalupe County Master Gardeners will sell plants at Seguin's Pecan Fest on Saturday, Oct. 24. Here is what to know, plus their November class and fall tree-planting tips.
Next Saturday, Seguin's Pecan Fest will have more than pecans. The county's master gardeners will be there with plants for sale.
The sale
The Guadalupe County Master Gardeners' 2026 plant sale schedule lists a sale at Pecan Fest on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is one of four sales on this year's schedule. The others were at Kingsbury Fest and the Guadalupe County Fair, and the last one is at Yulefest on Dec. 6.
The group's Plant Sale Team, working with its Grow Team, grows, collects and buys the plants sold at these events.
The store on Stockdale Highway
If you can't make it Saturday, the master gardeners also sell plants in person at 4037 Stockdale Hwy. in Seguin. Regular hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Note that the group says the store is closed on Saturdays when a plant sale is on the schedule, so it will be closed Oct. 24. Call 830-379-7203 with questions or for directions.
A free class for winter prep
The group's Lunch & Learn schedule lists "Mulch & Composting for Winter Prep," presented by Peter Hernandez, on Nov. 11 from noon to 1 p.m. at AgriLife. The program covers how mulch protects plants and how compost adds nutrients and builds healthier soil for spring. Seguin Public Library has a session listed for Nov. 14, with details still to come.
Planting what you bring home
For a tree or shrub from Saturday's sale, the Texas A&M Forest Service's Texas Tree Planting Guide offers simple rules:
Dig a hole at least twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper than it.
Set the plant with the root collar level with the ground or slightly above. Planting too deep is a leading cause of death in new trees.
Backfill with the soil that came out of the hole, with no amendments, and settle it with water instead of packing it.
Mulch two to three inches deep, keeping it off the trunk.
Water deeply rather than lightly and often, and don't fertilize during the first growing season.
Buying from master gardeners has an advantage over the big-box store: the people at the table garden in Guadalupe County, and many of the plants were grown by the group's own volunteers. Ask them what works. The group says it needs more volunteers for both the Grow Team and the plant sales, so you could also ask about joining.
