Opening of Newest State Veterans Home

On October 21st, the Texas Veterans Land Board (VLB) celebrated the soft opening of the new Tuskegee Airmen Texas State Veterans Home in Fort Worth. During this special event, the Fort Worth community, along with state and local officials, showed their unwavering support for our Veterans and the VLB’s tenth Texas State Veterans Home.

This new home is named in honor of the Tuskegee Airmen, an elite group of military aviators who served during World War II. Nicknamed the “Red Tails” for the iconic red markings on the tails of their aircraft, this group of over 900 airmen were the first all-Black flying group in the United States Armed Forces. 

The incredible legacy of all the Tuskegee Airmen spanned over 1,500 missions across North Africa and Europe, where they received more than 150 Distinguished Flying Cross awards, 60 Purple Hearts, the Congressional Gold Medal, and more. The Tuskegee Airmen went above and beyond the call of duty in service to their country and every American owes these Veterans a tremendous debt of gratitude.

One of the most beneficial ways we can repay our Veterans is to ensure they receive the highest quality of care when they need it the most. The VLB’s nine other Texas State Veteran Homes uphold the highest standard of care for our Veterans and provide them with the support and specialized treatment they need to enjoy their golden years of life.

Covering 108,000 square feet, the newest home will accommodate 120 Veterans and have four “neighborhoods,” or wings, that will provide skilled nursing care, including a memory support wing that will specialize in the treatment and care of Veterans with Alzheimer’s and Dementia. The home will also include a community center and offer a wide variety of onsite therapy programs including physical, speech and occupational therapy, as well as alternative therapies such as pet, art, music, and writing. This advanced facility will not only be a place for our Veterans to call home but will also be the center of a tight-knit community where their needs will always come first.
