Montgomery ISD Fishing Team: Shallow or Deep?

This was just one of the many challenges facing the MISD Fishing Team Anglers as they descended upon Toledo Bend Reservoir.  Do we try to locate and catch Bass “Shallow or Deep?”

Also, part of the puzzle was how the Team would avoid the extreme amount of pressure on the lake in the form of numerous tournaments held on this expansive body of water located on the Texas Louisiana border.  The main concern, how to not get in the way of the Bassmaster Elite Series Professional circuit, all the while trying to expand the Team’s lead in the highly competitive Houston Division of the Texas High School Bass Association.

The Team was successful on both accounts, steering clear of causing any issues with the Elite Pros, and successfully expanding their lead by winning the event as a Program with their 3rd win of the Divisional Season.  Coupled with the Team’s 2nd place finish at Sam Rayburn, the Team now has a sizeable lead going into the final Divisional Tournament of the season next month at Lake Conroe.

Leading the way for MISD was the Team of Ryan Ducharme and Jacob King.  This pair brought in a nice 5 fish limit that tipped the scales at 14.01 pounds, landing them in 3rd place out of 151 Individual Teams, from 20 Houston Area High Schools.

Coming in 5th with a limit weighing 12.84 pounds were Colton Hatzold & Jett Moore.  This pair reported that “we caught our limit exclusively on moving baits targeting shallow grass.”

The Team that rounded out the top 3 Teams for MISD was Maverick Barsh & Case Rutherford.  The current Anglers of the Year with one Divisional tournament left, landed 12.14 pounds on a 5 fish limit.  By doing so, these top 3 Teams from MISD, which is how programs can lay claim to be the Tournament Champion, had a combined weight of 38.97 pounds, claiming the victory for MISD.

The Team also had two other Individual Teams in the Top 10, which is a phenomenal feat to have 5 Teams in the Top 10.  Kohen Christopher & Weston Abbe came in with a 5 fish limit of 12.05 pounds, claiming 8th place.  Just behind them in 9th place was the Team of Jacob Riley and Brenner Kirklin with a 5 fish limit which weighed 11.96.

Next up for these talented young men and women of the MISD Fishing Team was the last THSBA Divisional Tournament, which was held at Lake Conroe on Saturday March 23rd, where the weigh in was at the MISD Stadium.  They then left immediately after the Tournament to head to Sam Rayburn for the the Bass Federation event on March the 24th.

For the event on Saturday March the 23rd, the Team hoped to see as many supporters as possible to cheer them on at weigh in starting at 3:00, with the hopes of nailing down their 9th Divisional Championship in 10 years of competing.  Besides Rudy’s was set up in the stadium parking lot serving up some delicious barbecue, even more reason to bring family and friends out in support of these young men and women, which represent the community of Montgomery with distinction.
