Butch Terpe's October fishing report covers black bass, crappie, white bass, hybrids, and catfish as water temperatures begin to cool on Lake Conroe.

October marks the beginning of a seasonal change on Lake Conroe. Even though it is still hot at times, the action will progressively get better over the next few weeks.

Black Bass

Bryan holds a largemouth bass during a Lake Conroe fishing trip.

Shad will start moving shallow toward the backs of creeks and coves, and bass will follow. Shallow-running crankbaits and plastic worms fished around boat docks and along any type of rock structure are a good pattern to start with. Some areas have stumps, logs, and grass beds, which are another good choice.

Crappie

Crappie action will continue to get better, especially as water temperatures start to cool down. Minnows and jigs fished along the 1097 bridge and brush piles in 15- to 20-foot depths are usually good patterns for crappie during this time of year.

White Bass & Hybrid Striped Bass

With the lake water cooling down some, these fish will be a little more active. Jigging slab spoons or trolling Pet spoons over main-lake humps and points should entice these strong-fighting fish into striking. I generally fish an area for about a half hour or so, then keep moving until I locate some action. Water depth is usually 20 to 30 feet during midday hours.

Catfish

Phillip and Brandon stand behind a large catch of catfish on ice.

This month is the start of some great catfishing action. Water temperatures are cooling down a bit, and these fish get much more active. Bait up areas in 17 to 23 feet along creek and river channels with range cubes and use any type of dip bait, and you should not have any trouble finding some good catfish action.
