Trump Rallies in Corpus Christi Today. Harbor Bridge Closures, Door Times and What to Know
President Trump speaks at 2 p.m. at the Port of Corpus Christi, one week before Election Day. Doors open at 10:30 a.m., and police will close Harbor Bridge southbound from noon to about 4 p.m.
President Donald Trump comes to Corpus Christi today, one week before the Nov. 3 election. If you plan to attend, or you just need to get across town this afternoon, here is what to know.
When and where
The rally is at the Port of Corpus Christi, 990 E. Port Ave., according to the official Republican event page. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. Trump's remarks are set to begin at 2 p.m. Central time.
The program begins at 12:30 p.m., KSAT reported. KSAT also reported that it was unclear who would join the president on stage.
How to get in
Attendance requires registration through the event page, with a limit of four tickets per signup. After you sign up, a text message is sent to your phone, and you are not registered until you confirm it by phone.
Read the fine print before you sign up. By giving your number, you agree to receive recurring calls and texts from the Trump 47 Committee and its participating committees, including the Republican National Committee. The page notes that donations may be solicited and that you can reply STOP to unsubscribe.
Road closures
If you are not going to the rally, plan your drive around it. According to KRIS 6 News, which cited Corpus Christi Police Department officials:
Harbor Bridge southbound will close beginning at noon. Drivers will have to take the Joe Fulton Corridor exit.
Harbor Bridge northbound will lose its left lane, and the bridge sidewalk will close.
North Port Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive to Whataburger Field will close in both directions.
The closures are expected to last until about 4 p.m. Give yourself extra time, and expect heavier traffic downtown and near the port in the early afternoon.
Why Corpus Christi
The stop was moved here from Waco. The Texas Tribune reported that a Trump-led rally first planned for Waco would instead be held in Corpus Christi, as Republicans push to flip the redrawn 34th Congressional District. The district stretches from Brownsville to Corpus Christi, and Trump won it by 10 points under its new lines.
Republican Eric Flores, whom Trump has endorsed, is challenging Democratic U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, who has never lost a general election. The GOP's Congressional Leadership Fund is shifting part of $3 million it had reserved for another South Texas race to help Flores, the Tribune reported.
Earlier this month, Trump held a rally at Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio, urging voters to back Republicans in closely watched races, KSAT reported.
A change of plans for Vance
Vice President J.D. Vance had been set to visit Corpus Christi on Thursday. On Monday, Nueces County Republican Party Chairman Carmen Calderon, Jr. confirmed to KRIS that Vance will no longer be coming.
Your ballot is about more than one race
Rallies draw cameras, but your ballot is where it counts. Early voting runs through Friday, Oct. 30, and Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Corpus Christi voters also face local questions, including a mayor's race and Proposition B, the fight over who pays for water during drought. Our guide to the Corpus Christi water vote lays out both sides.
Whatever you think of the president, a sitting president visiting your city is a big moment in civic life. Go if you want to, and be courteous to those who show up to disagree. Pray for those in authority, as Scripture asks (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Then do your own homework and vote.
Dock Line will not report on what the president says until he has said it. Check with local outlets this afternoon for coverage of the speech.
