Trump Names Stephen Miller Chief of Staff, Replacing Susie Wiles. Loyalty Still Needs the Truth.

Trump named Stephen Miller to replace Susie Wiles as chief of staff starting Monday. Wiles is moving to the Trump Political Operation.

The facts come first below. My opinion follows in the section marked as opinion.

President Donald Trump is replacing Susie Wiles with Stephen Miller as White House chief of staff. The change puts a longtime architect of the administration's immigration policy in charge of the West Wing after Republicans lost control of Congress.

CBS News and NBC News both reported Friday that Miller will start Monday. Both outlets reported that Wiles submitted her resignation Thursday night, citing administration officials. These are reports read Friday evening, Nov. 6, Central time; the incoming team's staffing could change before Monday.

A public change, not just speculation

Trump announced the appointment on Truth Social. He called Miller "one of my most trusted advisors" and said Wiles would move to the Trump Political Operation, CBS reported. Speaking afterward, Trump said, "I wanted to make a change." He also praised Wiles' work. The announcement was not a statement that she had abandoned the president or his political organization.

Wiles said Friday was her last day as chief of staff. In a statement quoted by NBC, she said, "While my role may be changing, my commitment to the President and the mission never will." NBC described Miller as the deputy chief of staff taking over her duties. Wiles had led Trump's 2024 campaign and served as chief since his return to office, CBS reported.

What is known about the departure

CBS linked Wiles' resignation to Republican election defeats, citing three people familiar with the matter. It also reported, citing sources familiar with her thinking, that she had expected to stay through the lame-duck session and leave around the end of the year or early next year. Those accounts of her private plans are sourced reporting, not a public explanation from Wiles herself.

Miller thanked Wiles and described his purpose in combative terms. "The mission now is more clear than ever: Fight with all of our soul to support our President and defend this magnificent Republic," he wrote, according to NBC. Both NBC and CBS described his central role in immigration enforcement and deportation policy.

Congress signals resistance

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said the president had learned nothing from the defeat and promised resistance. "Our Democratic majorities will fight him every step of the way," he said, as quoted by NBC. CBS also reported denunciations from Democratic leaders and a pledge of continued investigations by House Oversight Democrats. Those are political commitments, not completed investigations or findings of wrongdoing.

This is a different personnel decision from the Pentagon questions covered in Trump Defends Hegseth as Allies Say a Change Is Weighed.

Opinion:

A president is entitled to choose a chief of staff who can carry out his lawful orders. Immigration enforcement is a legitimate federal duty. Neither principle means every tactic is wise or every subordinate is above scrutiny. The law binds the man giving the order and the man carrying it out.

Changing the person outside the Oval Office will not, by itself, change a household budget or restore public trust. Miller should bring discipline, accurate information and a willingness to tell his boss when something is wrong. Loyalty without truth is flattery, and flattery is a poor foundation for government.

Democrats also have a choice. They can investigate particular acts with evidence, or announce a permanent war against a person before examining the record. Christians should demand honest work from both sides. Serve the country. Respect the limits of the office. Do not mistake fighting for governing. The strongest chief of staff is not the loudest voice in the room, but the one who makes lawful, competent work happen.
