March 2023- Conroe Fishing Report

Black Bass: March is when Lake Conroe lunkers start prowling around looking for a suitable place to dump their eggs. Most of these fish can be found in the back of protected creeks and coves where the water will be the warmest during this period. Many of these coves like different types of cover, such as boat docks, rocks, stumps and even grass which are good areas to concentrate on. You can cover a lot of water by casting a Rat-L-Trap or spinner bait. Once you locate some good bass, try casting Texas rigged worms and lizards to trigger a strike.

Crappie: Crappie can be found in many of the same areas as bass in shallow coves and can be caught by using minnows beneath a slip cork. I try fishing around every piece of cover such as stumps, grass and boat dock pilings. They can be as shallow as 1’ and as deep as 12’ depending on the depth of the cove.

White Bass & Hybrid Striped Bass: These fish will bunch up together and can be located on main lake points and humps in depths between 15’ – 25’. I like to start out by trolling pet spoons behind deep diving crank baits to locate and catch these fish. If I locate these fish near the bottom, I will use a ¾ oz. slab spoon and bounce it along the edge of these humps or points in order to catch these fish.

Catfish: The lake is full of 1 – 2 lb. catfish and can be caught anywhere along the river and creek channels using chicken liver, shrimp or dip baits in 15’ – 25’ depths. Just by baiting up areas with milo or range cubes you will attract a good number of these fish in the area where you are fishing.
