Lake Conroe Fishing Report
Black Bass: September brings the first signs of the season change. Even though the heat still lingers, the fishing action will surely get better in the coming weeks. Keep an eye out for shad; they’ll be moving toward the shallow waters in the back of creeks and coves, and the bass won’t be far behind. I’ve found that spinnerbaits and plastic worms tossed along the shorelines of boat docks and rocks, especially in areas with grass beds, make for excellent early-morning fishing spots. As the sun climbs higher, I shift my focus to deeper structures, hitting pond dams, roadbeds, and depths ranging from 8 to 17 feet.
Crappie: Action should start picking up toward the end of the month as the water temperatures cool down a touch. These fish can feel the change in the air, and minnows and jigs work like a charm along bridge pilings and around submerged brush in the sweet spot of 15 to 20 feet.
White Bass and Hybrid: This time of year, I kick things off by trolling spoons near the edges of the main lake. The humps and points in 15 to 25 feet have been my go-to spots lately. When I find a school of fish sitting on the bottom, I like to jig slab spoons to coax a strike. If the bait’s not showing in an area, I keep moving until I find a good patch.
Catfish: Catfish action has been fair throughout the summer, but I’m expecting it to really improve in the weeks ahead. I usually fish baited holes along creeks and river channels in about 15 to 25 feet using chicken liver, shrimp, or dip baits, all of which are solid choices. Plus, don’t overlook the pilings under the 1097 bridge—it’s a prime catfish territory
