Two Down One To Go

Two Down One To Go

Back in August the MISD Fishing Team set some pretty lofty goals.  First, win the Houston Division of the Texas High School Bass Association, which would be the Program’s 8th in 9 years of competing.  Second, win the Regional Championship out of 3 Divisions, the Houston, Bayou, and Hill Country, which comprises over 75 High School Programs.  If done, this would be their 4th out of 8 years, as there was no Regional Championship during to the dreaded Covid year of 2020.

Well, the combined squad of Lake Creek and Montgomery High School students that make up the MISD Fishing Team are proud to say that to date, they have accomplished two of the three goals set.  At the 5th and final stop of the Divisional Tournaments at Lake Limestone in March, the MISD Fishing Team secured First Place honors in a Division with 25 Teams.  Then, at the Regional Championship held on April the 15th, the Team won the Regional Championship on Lake Conroe.

Leading the way at the Regional Event was the proven defending TBF-SAF National Champions in Fallon Clepper and Wyatt Ford, bringing in a very impressive 5 fish limit, which tipped the scales at 17.98 pounds, capturing 3rd place out of a 192 boat field.  Following closely in 5th place was Jack Haag, who also brought in an impressive limit of his own of 16.14 pounds.  Rounding out the Top 3 Teams for MISD was Garrett Muckleroy and Austen Christensen, who brought 3 solid keepers to the scales, which weighed in at exactly 9 pounds.  All told, the top 3 Teams from MISD weighed 43.12 pounds, easily outdistancing our closest competitor by over 3 pounds.

Also at stake were coveted State Championship Qualifier berths, where Individual Teams needed to be in the top 30% of the 192 boat field, which in this case was 58th place and higher to qualify.  The MISD Fishing Team will have 7 Teams moving onto the THSBA State Championship May 20th-21st on fabled Sam Rayburn Reservoir.  The aforementioned Three Teams, will be joined by Colton Hatzold, Dallas Copeland, Evan Franks, Beau Massey, Wyatt Lanier, as well as the reigning Houston Division Anglers of the Year, Nate Millner and Curtis McCauley.

These 7 Individual Teams, which we will dub the “Magnificent Seven,” will represent not only themselves, their families, Lake Creek and Montgomery High Schools, the District, and Montgomery as a whole, where they look forward to achieving their 3rd goal, and win an elusive 2nd State Title.
