4 Privacy Fence Ideas That Will Make Your Home Look Better

4 Privacy Fence Ideas That Will Make Your Home Look Better

Privacy fence ideas are hard to come by. While the obvious answer would be to go with a wood fence, that’s not the only choice out there. In fact, you have many options even within the wood category of fencing to choose from. However, different types of privacy fences serve different purposes.

Not only that, but people often make the mistake that a privacy fence will prevent crime. However, that actually doesn’t seem to be true. Criminals often use privacy fences to their advantage, hiding behind corners or blind spots where you can’t see them. Know that whenever you build a privacy fence, you lose a lot of visibility.

That shouldn’t dissuade you from privacy fence ideas if you live in a low-crime neighborhood. In fact, it can make it harder for criminals to get into your home should you use the right materials. Here are some privacy fence ideas that will make your home safer and look better:

  1. Wood
  2. Vinyl
  3. Metal
  4. Chain link

Wood

There are various factors that come into play when buying a privacy fence, and the most popular of options is wood. Why is that? For the most part, wood can be fairly cheap. What you need to keep in mind, though, is the design.

There are several types of wood you can use, and privacy fence ideas should depend largely on the type of material you want to use. Wood fencing can be made out of:

  • Cedar
  • Pine
  • Redwood
  • Douglass Fir

Each of these different types of materials comes with their own maintenance, durability, and color. Wooden fences typically need to be restained at least once a year. Most wooden fences will last around 20 years with proper maintenance. If you don’t mind a cheaper price plus the added cost of labor and maintenance, the wood privacy fence may be right for you.

Consider the maintenance required for a wood fence when choosing a starter home as well.

Vinyl

While more expensive than wood, vinyl is a good option for a privacy fence. It requires much less maintenance and is more durable against the elements. Once every couple of months you will need to power wash it. Other than that, it takes care of itself.

Vinyl is also a great privacy fence idea because it looks more modern on a home. With its sleek points and durable frame vinyl can easily last you many years. More home buyers now than ever before are investing in vinyl privacy fences because of their durability.

Just make sure to install a fence or have a fencing company install a fence that is over 6 feet.

Metal

If you’re worried about storms or are close to the highway you may want to consider a metal privacy fence. Metal privacy fences are the most sturdy and provide the most protection. However, they are not necessarily the most beautiful.

For a metal fence, it requires large slabs of metal to be placed on top of each other. This makes it much harder for criminals to see in, but not so easy on the eyes. It’s also not a good option for those on a budget.

If you want to do a special design or have privacy fence ideas for a metal fence consider using a fencing company to make your dream come true. Most of the time, they can get materials at cheaper prices and have designers to help speed up the process. You don’t have to worry about doing it yourself.

Chain Link

We include chain link fences for one specific reason. In the event that you want a small amount of privacy with some visibility, it’s a good option. Some chain link fences can be erected in such a way to give you privacy. Oftentimes, special materials can be slotted through the fencing or the actual “links” are closer together.

We don’t recommend this option if you want a true privacy fence. Passerbys can see into your backyard or home relatively easily. Also, if you want a chain link privacy fence, it’s best left to the professionals.

  1. The part of your article that mentioned how vinyl fences are great for privacy fences really helped to read. Since I’ve been trying to transform my current classical home into something that looks more updated, a fence like this could really help me round out the look of it all the way to the exterior. Once I find a fencing contractor in the area, I’ll definitely ask for a privacy fence using this material.
